A long rounded panel of soft blue Song brocade, woven with a white flamingo, sits in a beaded gold-tone frame. It hangs from a small scrolled bail and a round green cabochon, on gold-tone ear hooks. The back of each panel is a gold-tone plate engraved with fine radiating lines.

The brocade is woven from mulberry silk and set in Miao silver with a gold-tone finish. Each piece is made by hand, so the placement of the pattern varies a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Song brocade has been woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty, its patterns built thread by thread on the loom from mulberry silk. For these earrings a small section of the cloth is cut so the flamingo sits whole within the panel, then pressed into its frame. They are light enough to wear through the day, and no two panels fall on the pattern in quite the same way.

Technique
Song brocade: a patterned silk weave in which extra coloured threads are carried through the cloth to form the motif. The woven mulberry silk is cut to shape and set into a Miao silver frame.
Care
Keep dry and away from water, perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Take care that the woven panel does not catch on knitwear or rough surfaces. Wipe the metal with a soft dry cloth and store each piece alone in its pouch.
