A cloud-shaped panel of blue Song brocade, woven with the curve of a white swan, sits in a fine beaded gold-tone rim with a small scrolled crest. It hangs below a round green cabochon on gold-tone ear hooks. The back is a gold-tone plate with fine horizontal lines.

The brocade is woven from mulberry silk and set in Miao silver with a gold-tone finish. Each piece is made by hand, so the swan falls a little differently on each panel, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Song brocade has been woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty, a dense silk cloth with its pattern woven in rather than printed on. Here the maker cuts the brocade to the cloud outline and eases it into a beaded frame so the swan reads across the panel. The pair sits close below the ear for everyday wear, and each panel shows its own part of the pattern.

Technique
Song brocade: a patterned silk weave in which extra coloured threads are carried through the cloth to form the motif. The woven mulberry silk is cut to shape and set into a Miao silver frame.
Care
Keep dry and away from water, perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Take care that the woven panel does not catch on knitwear or rough surfaces. Wipe the metal with a soft dry cloth and store each piece alone in its pouch.
