An oval of pink Song brocade, woven with a pale cloud-like pattern, sits domed in a slim gold-tone frame beneath a small pagoda-roof cap with ribbed eaves. A round green cabochon in a gold-tone setting links each drop to its hook, and the back of the frame is engraved with fine radiating lines.

The silk brocade is cut and fitted by hand over a padded base and set in a Miao silver frame. Because each piece is made by hand, colour and pattern placement vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Song brocade has been woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty, its patterns built thread by thread on the loom. For these earrings a small piece of pink silk brocade is cut to shape and fitted by hand into a Miao silver frame beneath a pagoda-roof cap. They are light enough to wear through the day. No two pairs show the pattern in quite the same way.

Technique
Song brocade: a patterned silk brocade woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty. A piece of mulberry-silk brocade is cut to shape, fitted over a padded base and set in a Miao silver frame.
Care
Keep away from water, perfume and lotion, and take care not to snag the silk. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe the metal gently with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
