A round bead of deep blue xipi lacquer hangs beneath an irregular gold nugget with a textured, molten-looking surface, worn as a post stud. The blue is scattered with flecks of gold and small iridescent points of colour, and a small gold cap finishes the base of each bead.

Layers of coloured natural lacquer are built up by hand over a sandalwood core, then polished back to reveal the marbled xipi pattern. Because each piece is made by hand, colour and pattern vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
In xipi lacquer, coloured natural lacquer is built up in layers over a core and then polished back until the colours below come through. This deep blue bead, worked over sandalwood, is scattered with flecks of gold and small iridescent points of colour where the polishing has opened the layers. It hangs from an irregular gold nugget with a textured surface, worn as a post stud.

Technique

Keep dry and away from perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
