A tapered panel of pale champagne Song brocade, woven with a soft tone-on-tone floral pattern, sits in a beaded gold-tone Miao silver frame. Above it, a small scroll-shaped link and a round green cabochon hang from a gold-tone hook ear wire.

The mulberry silk brocade is woven on the loom, then cut and set into the frame by hand. Because each piece is cut from a different part of the cloth, the pattern and colour vary a little from one to the next, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Song brocade has been woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty, a dense patterned silk valued for its soft sheen and fine, even motifs. On the loom, the weaver passes coloured threads through the cloth line by line until the pattern appears, and the finished silk is then cut and fitted into a hand-finished Miao silver frame. The quiet champagne tone sits easily with everyday clothes, with the green cabochon adding a small point of colour near the face. Because each earring is cut from a different part of the cloth, no two pieces show the pattern in quite the same way.

Technique
Song brocade: a patterned silk weave in which extra coloured threads are carried through the cloth to form the motif. The woven mulberry silk is cut to shape and set into a Miao silver frame.
Care
Keep dry and away from water, perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight, and keep the brocade clear of rough surfaces that could snag the threads. Wipe the metal gently with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
