A small gold ball stud holds an openwork diamond-shaped filigree piece set with small black stones, and below it hangs a round bead of deep green lacquer with a fine, even sparkle. A little gold cap and bead finish the base of each sphere.

Each bead is built on a sandalwood core and finished in natural lacquer with gold leaf by hand. The studs are 14k gold. Each piece varies a little in colour and pattern, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Natural lacquer is the sap of the lacquer tree, laid on in thin coats that each cure hard before the next goes on, which is why a lacquered surface keeps its depth of colour for years. For these earrings the maker builds a deep green sphere over a sandalwood core, coat by coat, until an even sparkle runs all the way round, then hangs it below a gold filigree diamond set with small black stones. Worn on 14k gold ball studs, the spheres sway a little as you turn. Because every coat is laid by hand, no two pairs are quite alike.

Technique
Natural lacquer and gold leaf are built up by hand over a sandalwood core to give the sphere its deep green sparkle. The beads hang from 14k gold ball studs beneath a filigree connector.
Care
Keep dry and away from perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
