A red lacquer sphere marbled with gold hangs below an openwork gold coin-flower charm on each earring. The pair is worn on small gold ball studs, and a tiny gold cap finishes the base of each sphere.

The spheres are made in layers of coloured natural lacquer, polished back to reveal the marbled xipi pattern. Because every piece is made by hand, the colour and pattern vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Xipi lacquer takes its marbling from coats of coloured lacquer laid one over another and polished back, so the pattern belongs to the layers rather than being painted on the surface. The maker builds red and gold-toned layers into each sphere and polishes them down until the red and gold run together. The spheres hang below openwork 18k gold coin-flower charms on small 14k gold ball studs, a pair with warmth for evening. The marbling forms differently each time, so no two pairs are quite alike.
