A tapered panel of silver-white Song brocade, woven with green leaves and a yellow-ochre flower, sits softly domed in a slim gold-tone frame with a beaded rim. A small scrolled cap and a round green cabochon in a gold-tone setting link each drop to its hook, and the back of the frame is engraved with fine radiating lines.

The silk brocade is cut and fitted by hand over a padded base and set in a Miao silver frame. Because each piece is made by hand, colour and pattern placement vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Song brocade has been woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty, its patterns built thread by thread on the loom. For these earrings a piece of silk brocade is cut so the leaves and flower fall across a tapered panel, then fitted by hand into a Miao silver frame. They hang long and light, for everyday wear or an evening out. No two pairs show the pattern in quite the same way.

Technique
Song brocade: a patterned silk brocade woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty. A piece of mulberry-silk brocade is cut to shape, fitted over a padded base and set in a Miao silver frame.
Care
Keep away from water, perfume and lotion, and take care not to snag the silk. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe the metal gently with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
