A round lacquer bead hangs below an oval openwork flower bead in 18k gold, on a 14k gold ear hook. The sphere is covered in small fragments of white duck eggshell set into deep green lacquer, with fine lines of green between the pieces and the odd warm fleck where the shell has its own colour.

The bead is built on a carved sandalwood core. Eggshell fragments are laid one by one into the wet lacquer, then the surface is filled and polished smooth. Because each piece is handmade, the pattern and colour vary a little from one to the next, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Eggshell inlay is a lacquer craft in which white duck eggshell is broken into small pieces and set into wet lacquer, and the surface is then filled and polished smooth. For this bead the maker lays each fragment by hand over a carved sandalwood core, leaving thin lines of deep green between the white pieces, so no two spheres share the same mosaic. It hangs below an openwork 18k gold flower bead on a 14k gold hook, a longer drop that moves a little as you turn.

Technique
Duck eggshell inlay: fragments of eggshell are set into layers of lacquer over a sandalwood core, then filled and polished back to a smooth, even surface.
Care
Keep dry and away from perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
