A round drop of purple xipi lacquer, marbled with lilac and soft grey and scattered with small gold-edged patches, hangs from a rectangular gold-tone stud with a raised, textured surface. A small round gold bead sits at the base of each sphere.

Layers of coloured natural lacquer are built up by hand over a sandalwood core and polished back to reveal the marbled xipi pattern. Because each piece is made by hand, colour and pattern vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
In xipi lacquer, coats of coloured natural lacquer are laid down one over another and then polished back, so the lower colours surface as a marbled pattern. On this purple sphere, worked over a sandalwood core, the maker draws out lilac and soft grey with small gold-edged patches. It hangs from a rectangular gold stud with a raised, textured surface, finished with a small round gold bead at the base.
