A glossy sphere of deep red lacquer, full of fine bright red flecks that catch the light, hangs from a gold ball stud on a slim bar link. A smooth gold-tone teardrop hangs below each sphere.

The sphere is built on a sandalwood core, with leaf laid between coats of natural lacquer and polished to a high gloss. Every piece is made by hand, so the colour and the scatter of flecks vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Natural lacquer can be polished to a deep, glassy gloss, and that finish is what has kept it in use for jewellery and fine objects in China. The maker builds up deep red lacquer over a turned sandalwood sphere, with fine bright red flecks held in the layers, and polishes each sphere until it shines. The spheres hang from gold ball studs on a slim bar link, with a smooth gold-tone teardrop beneath. The flecks settle differently in every sphere, so no two pairs are quite alike.

Technique
Leaf is laid into layers of natural lacquer over a turned sandalwood core, and the surface is polished to a high gloss.
Care
Keep dry and away from perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Store alone in its pouch.
