A small openwork gold coin charm hangs from each ear hook, and below it a round bead in deep red lacquer. The red is broken by a scatter of gold-coloured flecks and small dark-edged marks, and a little flower cap and end bead finish the base.

The bead is made in xipi lacquer: layers of coloured natural lacquer are built up and then polished back, so the lower layers surface as a marbled pattern. The ear hooks are 14k gold and the coin charm is 18k gold. Because the pattern comes from polishing by hand, each piece varies a little in colour and pattern, and photographs are for reference.

The story
The deep red bead is xipi lacquer: coloured layers of natural lacquer are built up and then polished back by hand until the lower layers break through as gold-coloured flecks and small dark-edged marks. The pattern only appears in the polishing, so each bead is unique. It hangs below a small openwork 18k gold coin charm on a 14k gold ear hook, a light pair of about 3.3 g that moves a little as you walk.

Technique
Layers of coloured natural lacquer are built up on the bead and polished back by hand to reveal a marbled xipi pattern. The bead hangs below an 18k gold coin-flower charm on 14k gold ear hooks.
Care
Keep dry and away from perfume, lotion and heat. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
