A silver-tone frame in the shape of a pipa, the Chinese lute, with its tuning pegs and ribbed neck, holds a teardrop of turquoise Song brocade woven with pale gold cloud scrolls. Seven small silver teardrops hang in a fringe beneath, and the back of the frame has a brushed, bark-like texture.

The silk brocade is cut and fitted by hand into a Miao silver frame. Because each piece is made by hand, colour and pattern placement vary a little from pair to pair, and photographs are for reference.

The story
Song brocade has been woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty, its patterns built thread by thread on the loom. Here a small piece of turquoise silk brocade is cut to a teardrop and set by hand into a Miao silver frame shaped like a pipa, with a fringe of silver drops that moves as you do. No two pairs show the pattern in quite the same way.

Technique
Song brocade: a patterned silk brocade woven in Suzhou since the Song dynasty. A piece of mulberry-silk brocade is cut to shape and set by hand in a Miao silver frame.
Care
Keep away from water, perfume and lotion, and take care not to snag the silk. Do not leave in strong sunlight. Wipe the metal gently with a soft dry cloth and store alone in its pouch.
